America is bracing itself for protests following the fatal shooting of a homeless man, by police, in downtown Los Angeles yesterday. The incident, recorded by a member of the public, took place at 12:36am (Pacific Standard Time) after police arrived to an altercation between two men.
Known as Africa, his real name as not yet disclosed, the unarmed victim is alleged to have grabbed for an officers side arm while being subdued by officers from the LAPD. Witnesses said he had been ‘tasered’ moments earlier after refusing to emerge from a makeshift tent on the busy sidewalk, just minutes away from the business district.
During the confusion and one of the four officers pinning the victim to the ground is heard to say: “Drop the gun, drop the gun.” Moments later five shots were fired and a witness is heard to say: ““They just killed that man. They just shot that motherfuckin’ man like that,”
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Speaking on Los Angles television LAPD spokesman, Sergeant Larry Montgomery, said: “It’s going to be a long investigation and we will, you know, get to the bottom of it.”
However, following a spate of fatalities involving mostly unarmed African American men at the hands of US police officers, it is likely that a swift resolution will be sought.
A protest, planned for tomorrow, will be of concern following the 2014 riots in Ferguson, Missouri after police shot and killed the unarmed 18 year old, Michael Brown.
